I found a BIG Rock

by on Jul.20, 2012, under DIY, Home Improvement

Digging the sewer trench we hit two big rocks. The first one we though was big, but then we hit this rock and it was three or four times the size of the first one we hit. It took us about an hour to dig it out using the excavator and a pick axe.

2012 Garden

by on Jun.10, 2012, under DIY, Gardening

I took some pictures of the garden tonight. Everything is growing well this year. Spring I didn’t get rained out for a long period of time like last year, but it has been dry. I have been having to water some of the plants.

Grant Taylor

by on Feb.19, 2012, under Family, General

It has been busy recently. My wife had our son Grant on 02/09/2012. We were at the hospital for 6 days. Then had to go back for another day because he had jaundice. He  is doing better now. Wow, I am tired of hospitals.

Coffee & end table update

by on Jan.26, 2012, under DIY, Woodworking

I have finished the coffee table and end table from a standpoint of building. Now I am moving onto finishing. I decided on Varathane Red Mahogany  for the color. I used a conditioner first and the end table turned out pretty good without too much blotching. I think because I used air dried wood that had been cut a few years ago. The coffee table was cherry lumber I bought that was kiln dried. I first used the same method on the top and it blotched very bad. I had to strip and sand it. I bought some Charles Neil blotch control and used this before staining. This worked great! I will post some pictures of the staining on the coffee table soon. The drawers in the coffee table are a rabbeted sliding dovetail with walnut dowels. I also included a couple shots of my workshop.

End table and new Bandsaw

by on Dec.24, 2011, under DIY, Woodworking

I finished the cherry end table based off of a plan in WOOD magazine. It is ready to be finished. I am waiting to finish this table when I complete the cherry coffee table I am making. I have most of the lumber milled. Yesterday I finished up the mortise and tenon for the support on the bottom. The only part I have left is the side to mortise and tenon where the drawers will fit into. I need a couple more board for the top. I purchased a new Grizzly G0555P  Bbndsaw with a riser block.  I can resaw lumber up to 12″. I resawed some stock for the slats in the bottom of the coffee table that was about 5″ thick. It cut like butter with a Timber Wolf 3tpi blade.
